The purpose of the awards program is to provide evidence of public recognition of
exceptional service or achievement of all current and former members of the Military Forces
of Texas and the Association.
Any member of NGAT, in good standing, or commander of any TXSG unit may submit a recommendation for
an award considered appropriate. A commander may submit a copy to higher headquarters with the request that a
higher commander add his or her endorsement or comments to the recommendation. Recommendations should include, but
not be limited to, a short summary of the nominee's achievements and a historical or biographical sketch of the
nominee's military and/or civilian record. The recommendation should be in narrative form and signed by the
individual recommending the award.
Association awards in order of precedent are as follows:

Former TSGA Medal
Presented for previous membership in the TSGA, the ribbon and medals may
now only be worn on appropriate TXSG uniforms by former TSGA life members prior to the merger with NGAT.
Life members of the association wear the hourglass device with the award.

The following awards are now awarded by the TXSG component of the National Guard Association of Texas.

Sam Houston Award
Awarded by NGAT for exceptional achievement furthering the aims and goals of the Nation, State, Community,
Texas Military Forces, and the Texas State Guard component of NGAT. The nominee must be considered a
visionary whose distinguished service was conducted with the highest military standard of integrity,
leadership, patriotism, and professionalism. The actions of the nominee must include 5 years of service to
Texas Military Forces or the Association. The nominee must also be a current member or associate member
of NGAT or must be a current or former member of the Military Forces of the State of Texas. Second and
additional receipt of this award is indicated by a gold star.

James Bowie Award
Awarded by NGAT for meritorious achievement and service in furthering the aims of the Texas Military Forces,
the State, or the Texas State Guard component of NGAT. The nominee has demonstrated humanitarianism through
the individual's generosity of time and self and whose distinguished service was conducted with the highest
military standard of leadership, organizational ability, and skills for the betterment of others. The actions of the nominee must include 3 years of service to
Texas Military Forces or the Association. The nominee must also be a current member or associate member
of the NGAT or must be a current or former member of the Military Forces of the State of Texas. Second and
additional receipt of this award is indicated by a silver star. There is not a
separate medal awarded with the ribbon.

William Travis Award
Awarded by NGAT for distinguished achievement furthering the aims and goals of the
Texas Military Forces or the Texas State Guard component of NGAT. The nominee has demonstrated loyalty
by demonstrating a commitment to the organization, to the leadership of the organization, and the
organization's mission. This service was conducted with the highest
military standard of leadership and integrity for the betterment of others. The actions of the nominee must include 3 years of service to
the security of the State of Texas. The nominee is not required to be a current member or associate member
of NGAT or a current or former member of the Military Forces of the State of Texas but
the achievement should be closely related to the security of the State. Second and
additional receipt of this award is indicated by a bronze star. There is not a
separate medal awarded with the ribbon.

Juan Sequin Award
Awarded by NGAT for distinguished achievement demonstrated by an act of valor which
reflected favorably upon the individual and the Military Forces of the State of Texas. The act must have
resulted in the protection and preservation of a life or lives or the preservation of property. The
achievement should demonstrate the individual acted due to skills and training enhanced through the
individual's participation in Texas Military Forces. The nominee must be a current or former member of the Military Forces of the State of Texas. There is not a
separate medal awarded with the ribbon.
